Overview of Consultation Services
We provide consultation services to support individuals, caregivers, professionals, and organizations in responding thoughtfully to complex clinical and interpersonal situations. Consultations are focused, collaborative, and designed to address concerns, clarify strengths, and develop practical next steps.
Unlike ongoing psychotherapy, consultations are typically time-limited and organized around specific questions. Consulting may involve a single meeting or a brief series of meetings, depending on your needs and the nature of the referral.
Types of Consultations
Clinical Consultation for Providers
For mental health and healthcare professionals seeking an experienced perspective on complex clinical presentations or practice-related questions.
Consultation may include case formulation support, differential diagnosis questions, and discussion of evidence-informed treatment planning.
We also offer consultation regarding assessment selection and interpretation, report-writing questions, and navigating systems as well as community services.
Organizational Consultation
For organizations seeking guidance in promoting psychological wellbeing and responding effectively when concerns arise in their community.
We also collaborate with leaders, support teams, and staff to clarify concerns, review relevant background information, and develop practical, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive plans.
Common areas of focus include providing support after a critical incident, addressing safety and risk concerns, enhancing interpersonal communication, and creating policies and procedures that reflect psychological best practices.
Consultation may occur through meetings with key stakeholders, participation in multidisciplinary teams, or time-limited projects aimed at improving climate, communication, and decision-making processes.
Consultation for Individuals and Caregivers
For adults, including caregivers, who would like a focused conversation about a specific concern, question, or decision related to mental health or behavior.
These consultations help clarify whether an evaluation, treatment, or systemic support may be beneficial, and types of providers or services to consider.
We can also assist with understanding previous testing or diagnostic feedback, preparing to speak with other professionals, and exploring options when you are unsure of the next step.
Consultations are collaborative and information-focused; they do not replace ongoing therapy or emergency services, but are designed to support informed, thoughtful decisions about care and available resources.
Who Can Benefit from Consultation
Consultation may be helpful when you are seeking expert input, a second opinion, or support in making decisions. Those who may benefit from consultation include:
- Attorneys developing case strategies for legal or administrative proceedings
- Adults navigating questions about their own mental health or treatment options
- Caregivers concerned about an older adult with dementia or other issues related to aging
- Mental health and healthcare providers seeking consultation regarding clinical matters
- Program directors and organizational leaders addressing complex situations
- Community partners and multidisciplinary teams
If you’re unsure whether consultation or ongoing therapy would best suit your needs, we can assist you in exploring your options and determining the most appropriate next step.
Our Consultation Process
The consultation process is structured and tailored to your specific questions. While each situation is unique, consultations with typically follow the following sequence:
- Initial contact: You share a brief description of your concern and what you are hoping to address through consultation.
- Screening and fit: We determine whether consultation is appropriate, whether this practice is the right setting for your needs, and what type of consultation may be most helpful.
- Scheduling and preparation: If we decide to move forward, a consultation appointment is scheduled.
- Consultation meeting: During your appointment, we clarify your questions and review key information. We also offer impressions, recommendations, and options for next steps.
- Follow-up: In some situations, additional consultation may be scheduled to review progress, address new questions, or assist with implementation of recommendations.
Consultation services provided by a licensed clinical psychologist are not intended for crisis or emergency situations and do not replace psychotherapy, psychological treatment, or a formal therapeutic relationship. These services are designed to offer focused, time-limited input on specific concerns within a supportive, non-pathologizing framework. Consultation does not constitute diagnosis, treatment, or the establishment of an ongoing clinical relationship. Recommendations are based on the information available at the time and are not a substitute for a comprehensive psychological evaluation or ongoing care. If clinical needs are identified, appropriate referrals for psychotherapy, psychological evaluation, or a higher level of support will be discussed to ensure continuity of care. A consultation is an adjunctive service that may provide perspective and direction, while respecting the limits of brief professional input and the importance of comprehensive mental health care.
